Wine Tenuta di Trinoro, “Sancaba” Bianco, Toscana IGT, 2023

Introduction

Andrea Franchetti has never been shy about planting grapes in unusual places. He planted Semillon in the Orcia Valley in Tuscany, Cesanese on Mount Etna, and here is the first harvest from a Grechetto plot planted on galestro and sandstone soils on the family estate of Sancaba, about 30 km south of Tenuta di Trinoro. Unfortunately, 2023 was a difficult year, and choices had to be made to find a compromise between the health of the grapes and their maturity. The Grechetto grape variety, thanks to its thicker and more robust skin, resisted infection better. The result is a leafy, lemony white wine with a fine, grassy character. In the mouth, it shows great freshness and verticality. Fermentation begins with six months of aging on the lees – mainly in cement tanks, but also partly in oak barriques. The latter gives the wine a certain woody astringency that doesn’t quite match the rest of the components at the moment, but should integrate with further time in the bottle.

It is worth paying attention to future harvests.
